keys medThere are a few simple measures you can take to help protect you against burglary and theft. A lot of intruders act on opportunity so installing a minimum level of security can make all the difference to help prevent an intruder coming into your home, such as:

Physical Security

  • Install key operated two cylinder deadlocks to all external doors.
  • Install patio bolts to sliding doors.
  • Install window locks to all accessible windows.
  • Install a burglar alarm system.
  • Install quality locks/padlocks to gates and sheds.
  • Install a quality safe if you have expensive or priceless assets.
  • Install a key safe outside your house; never leave a key hidden outside your house.
  • Install security screen doors and even screens to windows for a higher level of security.

Practical Deterrents

  • Always lock all windows and doors when you go out.
  • Never leave keys hidden outside; install a key safe or leave a spare set of keys with friends or family.
  • If you go out at night leave some internal lights and a radio on. A timer power point can work great for this     especially if you go on holiday.
  • Get to know your neighbours and if you trust them ask them to keep watch on your house if you go on holiday.
  • Trim back trees and shrubs, especially ones screening doors and windows.
  • Have lights on at night, sensor lights are a useful deterrent and are useful when you go outside in the dark.
  • Be sure to lock away outside items such as bikes, tools and ladders. Do not give thieves the tools to break in.
  • If you are in the garden or watching TV, lock up parts of the house you can’t easily keep an eye on.
